This manual reviews what is known about the prevalence and consequences of youth violence, the underlying risk factors and scientific studies on the effectiveness of youth violence prevention programmes. It also provides brief notes on how to strengthen youth violence prevention efforts. The prevention programmes covered by these studies are grouped into 21 youth violence prevention strategies under which the evidence for the effectiveness of the specific interventions in each strategy is reviewed. Each strategys relevance to low- and middle-income countries (where youth violence rates are highest) is explored, and the manual describes the human resources and institutional arrangements needed to support implementation of each strategy. The goal of this manual is to help reduce the number of young people who are harmed by youth violence and who perpetrate it. Achieving this goal requires effective prevention policies and programmes. By taking action to prevent youth violence and simultaneously generating evidence for its effectiveness, progress to achieving this goal can be accelerated.
