Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease : Pocket Guidelines for Assessment and Management of Cardiovascular Risk

Global Health Security Capacities
Non-communicable diseases and risk factors

Description

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of disability and premature death throughout the world. The underlying pathology is atherosclerosis, which develops over many years and is usually advanced by the time symptoms occur, generally in middle age. Acute coronary events (heart attacks) and cerebrovascular events (strokes) frequently occur suddenly, and are often fatal before medical care can be given. Risk factor modification can reduce clinical events and premature death in people with established cardiovascular disease as well as in those who are at high cardiovascular risk due to one or more risk factors. These pocket guidelines provide evidence-based guidance on how to reduce the incidence of first and recurrent clinical events due to coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) and peripheral vascular disease in two categories of people.
